LEATHERSECRETS

About LeatherSecrets

Our Mission

LeatherSecrets was founded with a simple yet powerful mission: to help leather owners and makers everywhere make smarter decisions, through approachable guidance and free tools that make estimating hide and cost, identifying leather types, conditioning schedules, and buying the right jacket, boots, wallet, belt, or bag clearer, more rewarding, and more practical.

We believe that everyone who owns, wears, or works leather, from first-time buyers to lifelong leatherworkers, deserves access to accurate tools, comprehensive resources, and trustworthy guidance. Our platform bridges the gap between confusing jargon and confident, well-informed decisions about tanning and materials, leatherworking and tools, care and maintenance, repair, and leather fashion and history.

Through our free collection of tools, we help leather owners make informed decisions about hide costs, leather types and grades, conditioning schedules, and the tools every leatherworker needs. Every tool is designed with real-world applicability in mind, tested against the day-to-day realities of buying, caring for, and repairing leather goods, and continuously improved based on user feedback. To go deeper, explore our Leather Craft & History museum, with galleries on tanning and materials, leatherworking tools and techniques, leather fashion through the ages, and the buying and care wisdom behind every great leather piece.

Our Story

LeatherSecrets emerged from a need we experienced firsthand. While trying to sort through conflicting advice and scattered references, we noticed a common challenge: the lack of accessible, accurate tools for the everyday decisions that come with buying a leather jacket or bag, conditioning a wallet or a pair of boots, and telling genuine leather from the imitations.

Working leather relies heavily on curiosity and a little know-how, which are invaluable. However, a confident leather owner also benefits from clear answers about how much a hide or a project costs, which tanning method and leather type suits a piece, how often to condition and clean it, and how to spot quality craftsmanship before buying. We saw an opportunity to combine well-researched leathercraft knowledge with modern tools to help people make confident decisions about every leather purchase and project.

Our team began developing tools that we wished existed when we bought our first leather jackets and boots. Each calculator and guide was created to solve real problems encountered when budgeting a leatherworking project, comparing tanning methods, or caring for a well-loved piece. We tested every tool against real-world numbers, refined the logic based on feedback, and ensured that the results reflected current, widely accepted leathercraft practice.

Today, LeatherSecrets serves active users worldwide, from first-time buyers to lifelong leatherworkers. Our tools have helped people estimate hide costs, identify leather types, plan conditioning schedules, and choose the tools for a project, and make more deliberate, confident decisions about leather goods.

Our Core Values

Our Expertise

LeatherSecrets’s tools and guides are developed and maintained by a team with extensive leathercraft experience across multiple areas:

Our team includes experienced leatherworkers, tanners, writers, and reviewers who bring years of combined experience to tool development. We regularly consult industry references and trusted experts to ensure our content reflects current best practice. Our content is general informational and educational content, NOT professional appraisal, restoration, or purchasing advice; results vary — always verify materials, care instructions, and pricing with the manufacturer, a qualified leatherworker, or an official source before making decisions.

Looking Forward

The future of leather craft lies in the intelligent combination of curiosity and proven know-how with modern tools and clear knowledge. At LeatherSecrets, we’re committed to staying at the forefront of this evolution.

Our development roadmap includes expanded tools for hide and project estimating, leather-type identification, and care scheduling. We’re also working on multilingual support to serve the global community of leather owners better, and developing specialized guidance for different leather types, goods, and ways of caring for them more deliberately.

Most importantly, we remain committed to keeping our tools free and accessible. As we grow, we’ll continue to prioritize user needs, ensuring that everyone has access to practical leathercraft tools regardless of their budget.
