After a pandemic-induced hiatus, YallaPunk, a festival that celebrates the queer and trans Southwest Asian and North African communities, is back in Brooklyn. The festival will feature a diverse range of programming between Sept. 12 and Sept. 15, at Market Hotel (1140 Myrtle Ave.) and Millennium Film Workshop (167 Wilson Ave.), according to a press release. The festival aims to foster connection and creativity through music, film, comedy, poetry, workshops and a vendor fair. “YallaPunk has always been about creating a space for the SWANA community to come together, share experiences, and amplify new voices,” the organizers said.
This year’s music lineup features an array of talent, including noise punk band Intercourse, D-beat group Wet Specimens, goth rock act Empathetic Assessment Module, high-energy band Clear Channel and Persian experimental favorite Tan Haw. The comedy lineup includes performers Nora Panahi, Izzy Salhani and Maram Jafar. The film section will showcase thought-provoking works exploring gender, sexuality and diasporic identity. Films include Eitr by Fateema Al-Hamaydeh Miller, Miss Chelove: From Java to the Streets of D.C. by Sara Gama, You Need Me by Mette Loulou von Kohl and Diasporistan by Shiraz Fazli. YallaPunk will also host workshops, including one on creative leather care, discussions on SWANA land back movements and “Habibi Futurism.”
The vendor fair will feature hand-woven scarves by Shaded Knot, unique jockstraps from Zakar Twins and harm reduction supplies provided by Angry Asian Womxn. Tickets can be purchased here.
